HuSeL FAQ

Why should I apply?

This contest is designed to reward and supplement the humanitarian efforts of Cal Poly students, and requires little extra effort; simply an application and, if selected, a brief final presentation and status report. In addition to monetary support for your research, you will also gain competitive experience as well as public attention for your work. The real question is “Why not apply?”

How do I submit an application to the competition?

Applications are submitted through the Submit a Project tab. The submission period closes Monday April 13th, 2009 (Spring Quarter Week 3) at 11:59 pm.

How do I know that you've received my entry?

You will receive an e-mail confirming the receipt of your submission.

How will my proposal be judged?

We believe that this competition should be “for the students, by the students.” Thus, a panel of students will conduct the preliminary judging using the following criteria:

What are the benefits?

If you are chosen as one of the seven finalists during the initial judging period, you will receive reimbursement for up to $500 deposit for project expenses. The expenditures include those proposed in your application for scholarly work and research supplies. The support will come from state funds, which means that there will be restrictions regarding its usage and its transfer to the project advisors’ state accounts. Once you are selected, we will work with you to ensure successful transfer of project support.

If you are chosen as one of the three winners, you will receive an additional $500 reimbursement for project expenses

When will the finalists/winners be announced?

The seven finalists chosen to receive the initial $500 of reimbursement will be notified by April 20th, 2009 (Spring Quarter Week 4). They will also receive further instruction concerning the competition timeline and the procedure. Finalist projects will also be featured on the HuSeL Homepage.

The seven finalists will be invited to present their project on Wednesday June 3rd (5-7 p.m.) to campus community. Three winners will be determined by a select panel. The final judging will be based on the following criteria:

How will finalists present project results?

Finalists will be asked to create a poster to present their project to campus community on June 3rd (5-7 p.m.) A final status report should also be emailed to the Cal Poly Honors Program (honors@calpoly.edu) prior to project presentation. Specific instructions for this status report will be given to the seven finalists mid Spring Quarter.
